Benzoin (Styrax benzoin)

Family Name: Styraceae

Description: The benzoin tree is native to tropical Asia. Like the rubber tree the gum is taken by making a deep incision into the trunk. The essential oil is made by extraction from the gum of the tree.

Origins: In the Far East the gum was used as incense to drive away evil spirits. Known in Europe during the Middle Ages when it was used as a compound tincture for inhalation. It was then called ‘Friars Balsam’.

Uses: Good for cystitis because of its strong antiseptic properties. Acts as a tonic to the lungs and is good for clearing excess mucus due to colds and influenza. Helps to sooth irritated and itching of the skin. Is very calming and comforting oil in the time of emotional crisis. Helps to release past tensions and resentments.

Cautionary note: Avoid use with babies and infants.
